Rabat – Turkish authorities arrested on Sunday morning at least 20 members suspected of planning attacks and having links to ISIS, commonly known as Islamic State.

Turkish police raided in the predawn three districts of Istanbul, where 20 suspects were arrested. Fifteen of the suspects are foreigners who are believed to have spent time in Syria and Iraq fighting in favor of terrorist groups, reported Maghreb Arab Press (MAP).

Turkish police announced that they had arrested a Syrian national in Urfa, officially known as Sanliurfa in southeastern Turkey.

Last Friday, 46 suspected members of the extremist group, including 43 foreign nationals were arrested in Istanbul and 29 in Ankara.

Turkey arrested at least 272 suspects for their involvement in ISIS group in the previous week.

Turkey is now on alert due to security threats to tighten security measures in order to prevent possible attacks during the New Year celebrations. Authorities have banned mass festivities in both Istanbul and Turkey’s capital Ankara.

During the 2017 new year celebrations, a bloody attack against a discotheque in Istanbul killed 39 people. The attacker was arrested two weeks after the terrorist attack.

Turkish police on Saturday launched the operation “peace and safety” across the country with 80,643 security officials, 33 aircrafts and 70 vessels along with 309 detection dogs.

According to the Turkish Ministry of Justice, at least 780 people, including 350 foreign nations are still being held or sentenced in the country for alleged links to the terrorist groups.
