Rabat – Moroccans mourn the heartbreaking death of a young 9-year-old girl, who was swept away yesterday by strong floods that struck Berkane, along with other eastern Moroccan provinces.

Heavy rainfall hit several regions, disrupting the movement of residents and vehicles.

The young girl, Youssra, and her father fell into a sewage pit in one of the villages after they were swept by the floods, converging reports said.

Rescue teams were able to rescue the father, but the girl tragically went missing.

It was not until late that night that citizens and rescue operators recovered the body of the young girl.

Many took to social media, sending messages of condolence to the child’s family.

Moroccan users across the country as well as companies shared Yousra’s heartbreaking story.

The little girl’s family, including her father, mother, and little sister were outside during the turbulent weather because they were picking up Yousra from her extracurricular activities just before sunset to celebrate a Ramadan ftour.

The mother was carrying the little sister on her back, and succeeded in crossing the street, but Youssra and her father were swept away.

Some citizens gave the father a hand and helped him to succeed in resisting the floods, but Yousra fell into the pit.

Public outcry at infrastructure failures

Many shared concerns about the infrastructure situation in the region, condemning the fact that only 20 minutes of rainfall was “enough to sweep a girl into a sewing pit.”

“The city is undergoing constructions but safety conditions are absent,” local journalist Mohamed Tlaghi said on his Facebook.

Many have called for an investigation to hold everyone responsible.

“Berkane’s crime should be a lesson to all people failing in their,” another citizen wrote online.

Others have called on lawyers to adopt the case and file a lawsuit, noting that this should not be treated as a “normal incident.”

“The case should be brought to court, so that this tragedy serves as a lesson for all institutions that neglect the maintenance of infrastructure in any city,” TV host Redouane Erramdani said.

Yousra’s death recalls a similar scenario that made international headlines in 2022, when a 5-year-old boy, Rayane, was trapped in a well near Chefchaouen, in northern Morocco.

The death of Rayane shocked Moroccans and all who had been hopeful to hear good news from the conclusion of rescue operations after three days of tireless efforts.
