Casablanca – Morocco has called on Italy to quickly carry out a full investigation into the death of Moroccan national Abderrahim Fakir in Bologna, saying it wants all the circumstances surrounding the case to be established.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates said it is following the case with deep concern. The statement further urges the relevant Italian authorities to speed up a comprehensive investigation into the case, provide the necessary explanations about what happened, determine responsibilities, and ensure that all legal procedures are fully applied.
The ministry said Morocco will continue to closely monitor the case as part of its commitment to protecting the interests of Moroccans living abroad. Strict instructions have been given to the Moroccan Embassy in Rome and the Moroccan Consulate General concerned to follow every development, it added.
The statement comes after Fakir died following an intervention by Italian police in Bologna. The 43-year-old Moroccan was stopped by police after reports that he was behaving erratically. Videos shared on social media showed officers restraining him on the ground while he repeatedly called for help. He then lost consciousness and died.
The incident has drawn strong reactions in Morocco and Italy. Earlier, Morocco’s ambassador to Italy called for a thorough investigation to clarify the circumstances of Fakir’s death and ensure that all facts surrounding the case are brought to light.
