Washington, February 19, 2012 (MAP)

Morocco expressed strong condemnation following the spread of information saying that a man with presumed Moroccan nationality plotted to perpetrate a terrorist attack on the US Capitol, Morocco’s Embassy in the US said on Saturday in statement.

“The Kingdom of Morocco and its people were saddened to hear of attempts to commit an act of terror against the people and Government of the United States of America by an individual presumed to be Moroccan,” the statement said.

“The Kingdom of Morocco condemns such extremist thinking and expressions of such attitudes in acts of violence,” the Embassy added, stressing that “Any act of terrorism stands in direct opposition to the fundamental values of the Kingdom of Morocco and its people.”

“Morocco offers its support and assistance to the American authorities as they investigate these incidents, and reaffirms its commitment to the strong bond that our two nations share,” the statement went on to say.

Reacting to this foiled bombing plot, US Congressman Michael Grimm voiced pride regarding the “close relationship with Morocco” and the values shared between the two countries.

Morocco, he said, “remains a vital strategic and economic partner and we should not allow the actions of a few extremists to keep us from strengthening our strong, long-standing friendship.
