Rabat – Sefrou-native Mama Azmata, 19, was selected as “Cherry Queen” out of 50 competitors during the 97th Annual Cherry Festival held on July 6-9 in the city of Sefrou.
The jury committee for the festival’s beauty pageant selected only ten competitors to compete in the pageant final.
For the very first time since its inauguration, competitors from outside Morocco were allowed, including Saridou Ali Mohammed from Djibouti and Goud Ehine from Cote D’Ivoire. Organizers announced the entry of non-Moroccans allowed the festival to show the diversity of African beauty.
El Adlouni Al-Ouali, president of the beauty pageant’s jury relayed the importance of cultural competence to the festival. “Cultural competence is the most important condition for admission to the beauty competition, in addition to the need to carry ideas of development projects in favor of the city of Sefrou.”
The Cherry festival is recognized by UNESCO as an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’, and is considered to be the oldest cultural festivals in Morocco.
On Saturday, the third day of the festival, both of Mohammed Hassad, Minister of Education and Mohammed Laensar, President of the Fes-Meknes region were in attendance.
The 97th Cherry Festival was organized by KARASE Foundation in partnership with the city’s urban commune.
