Rabat – The international community is sitting on pins and needles at the prospect of the US recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Morocco reacted by summoning the ambassadors of Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom, asking them to “take full responsibility for preserving the legal and political status of Al Quds and to avoid anything that might stir up conflicts and undermine stability in the region.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita, met on Wednesday with the American Chargé d’Affaires in Morocco, Stephanie Miley, permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, and the Palestinian Ambassador to Rabat, Jamal Shobaki, under the instructions of King Mohammed VI.

During the meeting, Bourita officially handed over to Miley a message from King Mohammed VI to Trump, in which he expresses his deep concern about the decision of the American administration, “insisting on the centrality of the Al-Quds question, the refusal of any violation of its legal status and political and the need to respect its religious symbolism and preserve its ancestral civilizational identity,” said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The minister recalled Morocco’s firm position on the issue of Jerusalem and the “King’s numerous initiatives since the announcement of Trump’s intention to recognize Al Quds as the capital of Israel and to transfer its embassy to the holy city,” added the statement.

In a telephone conversation with the president of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, King Mohammed VI reaffirmed “the strong and constant solidarity of the Kingdom with the People of Palestinian in defense of their cause and their legitimate rights, especially regarding the status of Al Quds Al-Sharif,” according to a statement issued by the Royal Cabinet on the same day.

The King also expressed his strong disapproval “of any action likely to compromise the multi-confessional character of the Holy City, or alter its legal and political status.”

For months, Trump has been vowing to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and to recognize the city as Israel’s capital.

After signing a waiver that delayed plans to move the US embassy to Jerusalem for six months, Trump is expected on Wednesday to order his aides to move the embassy to Jerusalem as well as to recognize it as Israel’s capital.

If Trump does fulfill his vows, the US would be the first country to do so since the founding of Israel in 1948.
