26 Moroccan Beaches Awarded 2020 Blue Flag Label

Rabat – The Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment proudly announced that the 2020 “Blue Flag” label has been awarded to 26 Moroccan beaches and the Saidia marina.

In a recent statement, the foundation indicates the success of the municipalities responsible for managing the cleanliness and overall maintenance of the beaches.

Supported by the “Clean Beaches” program and the General Directorate of Communities, Morocco provides “the security which summer visitors need to relax after more than three months of sanitary confinement.”

In total, 36 beaches applied for the Blue Flag label in Morocco. The 26 recipient beaches contribute to the 4,664 worldwide sites recognized with a blue flag throughout 42 different countries.

According to the Blue Flag official website, in order to qualify for the label, “a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria must be met and maintained.”

The Foundation for Environmental Education awards the internationally recognized eco-label to beaches, marinas, and boating tourism operators that meet specific standards aligned with the United Nations sustainable development goals.

Among others, determining Blue Flag criteria includes the organization and promotion of the space’s educational activities, water quality, site management, safety, and site accessibility. As well, sites should maintain the permanent display of relevant information regarding its biodiversity, ecosystems, and environmental phenomena.
