Rabat – President of the National Assembly of Sao Tome and Principe, Delfim Santiago das Neves, reiterated on Tuesday his country’s unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
The official also lauded Morocco’s diplomatic efforts aiming at defending national causes in both the Pan-African Parliament and in continental organizations.
Das Neves made the remarks in a statement to the press following a meeting with the speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives, Habib El Malki.
The meeting also served as an opportunity for Sao Tome and Principe to express gratitude to Morocco for providing medical aid to assist it in coping with the COVID-19 health crisis.
Morocco has given medical aid to a number of African states to support them in mitigating the health repercussions of COVID-19.
The medical aid sent on June 2020, included nearly 8 million face masks, 900,000 visors, 600,000 hygiene caps, 60,000 coats, 30,000 liters of hydroalcoholic gel, as well as 75,000 packs of chloroquine and 15,000 packs of azithromycin (an antibiotic).
Meanwhile, El Malki commended the steady support of Sao Tome and Principe for Morocco’s territorial integrity, particularly within the African Union and the Pan-African Parliament.
Das Neves, who is on a working visit to Rabat, held talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Africa Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad in a meeting earlier today.
During the high-level discussions, the president of Sao Tome and Principe expressed his country’s willingness to foster bilateral cooperation in many fields, mainly on political and diplomatic levels.
Das Neves welcomed the excellent relationship between Morocco, Sao Tome, and Principe, evidenced by the inauguration of a consulate general in Laayoune and an embassy in Rabat.
The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe inaugurated a consulate general in Laayoune, southern Morocco, on January 23, 2020.
Sao Tome and Principe have joined a growing list of African states that opened their consulates general in Western Sahara, either in Dakhla or Laayoune.
