Rabat – The Association of Senates, Shoura and Equivalent Councils of Africa and the Arab World ( ASSECAA) , has strongly condemned the recent EU resolution on Morocco’s supposed “use of minors” in the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave Ceuta.
In a statement, the general secretariat said that the EU resolution contains criticisms and unfounded accusations concerning the policies and mechanisms that Morocco adopts to combat irregular migration.
On June 10, the European Parliament adopted the resolution with 397 votes in favor, slamming Morocco for the recent incidents of mass irregular migration in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
About 85 members of the European Parliament voted against the resolution, emphasizing Morocco’s key role in migration management.
ASSECAA’s statement means the body is joining a growing cohort of international organizations that have called on the European Parliament to review the “unjustified resolution.”
The association also condemned the resolution’s decision to ignore Morocco’s “tireless and tangible efforts in the fight against illegal immigration and the issues of human trafficking and terrorism.”
The group’s statement also called on the EU to refrain from siding with Spain in its dispute with Morocco and instead adopt pragmatic positions and promote a rational dialogue to deal with the rift between the two neighbors in a bilateral framework.
Like ASSECAA, other international bodies have taken issue with the EU for “europeanizing” a purely bilateral disagreement between Rabat and Madrid.
On Sunday, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a statement in which it called on the European Parliament to adopt a positive attitude in the ongoing Spain-Morocco rift and avoid “exacerbating” the crisis between the two countries.Earlier Today, the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) also officially released a formal statement condemning the EU’s political resolution against Morocco.
