Rabat – The government coalition is pushing for the candidacy of Rachid Taleb Alami to replace Habib El Malki as the president of the House of Representatives for Morocco’s parliament.
The coalition has also announced the candidacy of Al Naam Miyara for the presidency of the House of Councillors, to succeed Hakim Benchamach.
The coalition said during a press release on Thursday evening, that the candidacies were submitted in preparation for the election of the speakers of the two chambers of parliament, as well as other organs of the legislative institution in accordance with Morocco’s constitution.
The nominations were also in line with the results of the electoral votes during the September 8 general elections.
Talbi Alami is a member of the National Rally of Independents (RNI). The party secured the majority of the votes during the September 8 general elections, with 127 seats in the House of Representatives.
Alami, 63, held the position of the speaker of the House of Representatives from 2014 to 2017.He also held several ministerial positions, including the Minister of Youth and Sports between 2017 and 2019.
Alami holds a PhD in management and finance from New York University (NYU) in the US.
He also holds a university degree from the Mohammed V University in Rabat.
Meanwhile, Naam Miyara was the president of the General Union of Workers in Morocco.
The government is expected to announce whether Alami and Mayara will take office as speakers for the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors in a plenary session scheduled for Saturday.
On Thursday, King Mohammed VI was presented with the list of the new government, led by Aziz Akhannouch.
Seven women were appointed as ministers, a step towards equality and the inclusion of women in policymaking in Morocco.
