Rabat – Morocco’s government officially announced it will not extend the current seven-day school holiday by another week.
In a press statement following the weekly cabinet council, Spokesperson of the Government Mustapha Baitass said today that the return to schools will be “normal” after the current winter holiday, which ends January 2, 2022.
“There is no extension of the school vacation,” he said.
Online rumors suggested that Morocco’s Scientific Committee monitoring the COVID-19 situation would recommend extending the holiday to add another week off of school.
The rumors, which were published by several news outlets, began after the outbreak of Omicron in Morocco. Morocco confirmed the first case of Omicron in early December 2021. The number of total cases of Omicron is currently 28 and the government is monitoring 46 other suspected cases.
Five out of the 28 confirmed new Omicron cases in Morocco are patients aged between four months and 13 years old.
Morocco confirmed a third wave of COVID-19 on December 26.
According to official estimates, the wave started in the week from December 20-26, during which three regions went from a low level of COVID infections to a moderate level. Health officials forecast a peak of Omicron cases during the week between January 17-23.
