Rabat – Morocco’s Health Ministry has urged citizens to continue complying with COVID measures to avoid any deterioration of the country’s epidemiological situation amid fears of a potential outbreak of Omicron, the latest variant of the COVID-19 virus.
Noting an “upward trend in the epidemiological curve during the last two weeks,” the ministry said the warning is a response to “the abandonment” of the main preventive measures against COVID-19 by a “large number of citizens.”
The virus is still among us, the ministry warned, recalling the emergence and the spread of the Omicron variant in many countries.
Appearing to deplore the complacency of many citizens and residents amid Morocco’s broadly successful containment of the COVID-19 crisis, the ministry insisted that preventive measures remain necessary to fend off any deterioration of the country’s epidemiological situation.
zThe statement also called on citizens to become “committed as quickly as possible to compliance with simple and inexpensive prevention measures, which demonstrate their effectiveness.”
The measures include the “correct” wearing of face masks, frequent hand washing, and social distancing.
Vaccination is another point highlighted in the ministry’s statement, with authorities urging citizens to get vaccinated to counter the spread of Omicron and other strains of the COVID-19 virus.
Morocco detected its first Omicron case today. The patient is currently under medical supervision at a Casablanca hospital and is in stable condition, the health ministry announced earlier today.
With news of the first Omicron case in Morocco, it remains to be seen whether the government’s constant calls for vigilance and caution will finally be heeded by citizens and residents who have evidently become COVID-complacent due to Morocco’s successful response to the health crisis.
