Rabat – Morocco’s traditional Caftan dress was a highlight in this year’s 70th Miss Universe competition that is taking place in Israel.
The traditional dress was worn by the young Miss Morocco, Kawtar Benhalima, whose wardrobe was put together by Moroccan stylist Samira Haddouchi.
Kawtar showed up to the ceremony as one of the competitors for the crown in a traditional Moroccan Caftan, which was in a dark shade of green and had a window revealing its wearer’s head.
Guests applauded the outfit’s splendor, with the host of the ceremony commenting that it is “a traditional look that represents elegance, majesty, and more than twelve centuries of history.”
The caftan’s design was inspired by the different costumes and styles that have characterized Moroccan fashion throughout its history, according to the stylist Samira Haddouchi.
For her, “dressing Kawtar, who represents Morocco at Miss Universe, was a source of pride and a great responsibility.”
She also expressed a sense of honor from being able to present the Moroccan costume in such a global event.
Morocco’s caftans have been increasingly gaining popularity worldwide, both with fashion designers and the public at large.
