Rabat – The administration of the local Toulal 2 prison in Meknes has reported that a terror convict committed suicide in his cell on Saturday morning
The prisoner, who had been sentenced to death, was arresteed and detained as part of an operation against the fight against extremism and terrorism, the prison administration said in its tatement.
In the statement, issued on Saturday evening, the prison administration explained that the man hanged himself with a piece of cloth that he had attached to the window of his cell.
The detainee suffered mental and psychological disorders and had been under medical treatment inside and outside the prison for his mental troubles, it added.
Despite security guards’ intervention, the convict died before being transferred to the hospital outside the prison.
The administration informed both the public prosecutor’s office and the detainee’s family of the convict’s death in accordance with the provisions of the law, concluded the statement.
This is not the first time that a terror-convict has ended their own life in a Moroccan cell.
In one of the latest cases, a terrorism suspect died in December 2020 after a month and a half-long hunger strike.
The suspect, who was arrested for his affiliation to ISIS, refused “meals from the tyrants.”
Before his death, the detainee murdered a prison guarden in a prison near Rabat on October 27, 2020.
Investigators later established that the ISIS-affiliated inmate had locked the prison guard into his cell before murdering him with a sharp object.
