Rabat – Moroccans and non-Moroccans are sharing posts to express compassion with the family of Ayoub Ayoubi, a man who died under mysterious circumstances in Belgium.
The man is believed to have died on January 12, the Moroccan consulate in Brussels indicated in a statement, noting that it learned of the man’s death on January 18 and immediately contacted services of the municipal administration in the city of Asse to obtain more information on the deceased.
According to a residence card issued in Spain, the Moroccan man was identified as Ayoub Ayoubi from Imzouren near Al Hoceima, northern Morocco.
The consulate said that it received help from some Moroccan citizens to reach out to the family of the Moroccan man.
The contact made it possible to locate a brother of the deceased in Brussels, the consulate explained, emphasizing that it has also sent a letter to the Public Prosecutor of Halle in Vilvoorde, requesting assistance to determine the circumstances of Ayoubi’s death.
The consulate said it also reached out to the lawyer of the Moroccan man and has maintained regular contact with Belgian authorities to obtain more information on the causes of the death, wishing condolences to the family of the deceased.
The consulate also reassured the family of its support during the investigation.
Posts about Ayoubi’s death have been going viral on social media, with people demanding a thorough investigation to determine whether he was killed.
Some Facebook pages and posts said that the family of the victim had noticed bruises and scars on his body.
Some of them also shared pictures showing that Ayoubi’s hands had bruises that may have been traces of handcuffs.
