Morocco’s Government Sets A Roadmap for Social Dialogue with Unions

Rabat – Morocco’s government held a round of meetings with representatives from the private and the public sector on February 24-25 in line with the government’s effort to stimulate social dialogue in the country.

The first round of social dialogue comprised a series of meetings with the presence of representatives from major national unions including the Moroccan Labor Union, the Union of Workers, the Democratic Labor Confederation, and the Enterprise Union.

Attendees have agreed during the meetings to form a committee comprising secretaries from unions and ministers. The committee is in charge of forming sub-committees to deliberate over major issues and another committee to address issues within the private sector chaired by Morocco’s Economic Inclusion Minister, Youness Sekkou, according to an official statement.

The central committee is to form another sub-committee to deliberate over issues within the public sector headed by Deputy Minister of Digital Transition, and Administrative Reform, Ghita Mezzour, indicated the statement.

Another technical committee will oversee the drafting of union demands into legislation, the release specified.

During the meetings, Morocco’s head of government, Aziz Akhanouch, stressed the need to address the hardships facing Moroccan farmers amid adverse weather.

Speaking on the social front, Akhannouch pointed out that the government will enact a series of measures to preserve citizens’ purchasing power by increasing state subsidies and opening a dialogue channel with relevant sectors, noted the official statement.

Regarding social legislation, the parties deliberated on a draft legislation regulating the right to strike, laws governing unions, and modifying labor law.

A delegation of ministers took part in the series of meetings including Morocco’s Economic Inclusion, Small Businesses, and Employment Minister, Youness Sekkouri, Deputy Minister in charge of the cooperation with the parliament, and spokesperson of the government, Mustafa Baitas, and Deputy Minister in charge of Digital Transformation and administration reform, Ghita Mezzour.
