Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali has signed a joint work program with the International Energy Agency (IEA’s) Executive Director Fatiga Birol covering 2022 and 2023 to advance the country’s decarbonization and renewable energy roadmap.
The agreement took place on the sidelines of a two-day ministerial meeting with the (IEA) at the OECD headquarters in Paris from March 23 to 24.
Welcoming Morocco’s participation in the ministerial meeting and the signing of the joint work program, Birol tweeted “Morocco was one of the 1st Association countries to join the IEA family and I look forward to further strong cooperation.”
Faced with an ongoing energy crisis, the IEA is organized its first post-COVID-19 ministerial meeting to “address today’s urgent energy security challenges, including the importance of accelerating the clean energy transition as a key part of the solution,” stated the agency.
The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has heightened the economic crisis, leading to public outcry in Morocco and other countries from rising fuel and goods prices.
The meeting is also set to reaffirm the leading role of the IEA as a supporter of its members’ commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reaching climate and energy security.

Morocco is aiming to make 80% of its electrical energy from renewable sources by 2050.
To meet its goal, the government has worked on expanding its renewable energy infrastructure, increasing its energy capacities, and prioritizing bilateral cooperation in renewable energy leading to the signing of cooperation agreements with strategic partners. The list of partners includes Bahrain, Finland, and the UK.
