The former Ajax Amsterdam star announced the news on his Instagram account.
The news, having circulated on social media, received overwhelming applause from fans of the former international footballer.
According to local press, the former player completed his conversion in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.
The Dutch player said he was happy to join the Muslim community.
He wrote that he is “very happy and happy to be able to join all Brothers and Sisters around the world,” giving special thanks to “Sophia [Makramati] who has taught [him] more about the meaning of Islam.”
Seedorf enjoys great popularity among football fans in the Arab and Islamic world.
The news of Seedorf converting to Islam comes one month before the start of the holy month of Ramadan for the Islamic year 1443.
Concerning his name, Seedorf said that he will keep the name his father gave him, in honor of his parents.
Seedorf played for the biggest European clubs during his professional football career, including Ajax Amsterdam, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and AC Milan, until retiring from Brazilian venues in 2013.
The midfielder, who was born in the Republic of Suriname in 1976, rose to prominence as a result of his long association with AC Milan, which saw him become one of the club’s most prominent legends, with Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini, Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, and Frank Rijkaard.
Seedorf is the only player in football history to win the Champions League with three different clubs, including with Ajax Amsterdam in 1995, Real Madrid in 1998, and AC Milan in 2003 and 2007.
