Rabat – Moroccan Judge Jamila Sedqi, won, on Wednesday evening the 2022 European International Women’s Leadership Award (EIWLA) in Brussels.
The European Movement International (EMI) and the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) established the EIWLA to honor prominent female figures who bring about change.
The awards are handed out annually to women who are striving to develop their potential in male-dominated fields.
The event celebrates women leaders who broke traditional obligations and pursued their professional goals, providing a model for all women to make their voices heard and develop their potential.
Ms. Sedqi’s successful career received special attention during this year’s award ceremony.
Sedqi is an attorney general at the Court of Cassation in Morocco, a judge at the Administrative Tribunal of the African Union, and the President of the African Judges Dialogue Forum.
After receiving the award from Vice-President of the European Parliament Nicolas Beer, Ms. Sedqi expressed her great pride for representing “liberated and responsible Moroccan women heads of the family.”
The Moroccan judge stressed the progress made to improve the conditions of Moroccan women since the 1990s in terms of promoting women’s rights.
Sedqi highlighted the public policy reforms of the national judicial system related to gender equality and the protection of women’s rights.
Ms. Sedqi also touched on the substantial political and constitutional reforms that Morocco implemented in regard to integrating women, particularly in the development of the status of women judges.
In this regard, Sedqi pointed out that out of 4,215 judges in Morocco, 1.048 are women, making up 24.87 % of judges in Morocco.
Radouan Bachiri, President of the International Women’s Leadership Forum, considers the event an opportunity to honor women leaders from all around the world who inspire and make lasting changes within their community, as well as within areas of politics, education, and entrepreneurship.
According to the event’s organizers, the International Women’s Leadership Forum provides a platform for all female parliamentarians, entrepreneurs, heads of NGOs, journalists, scientists, researchers, legal professionals, and all women leaders in their respective fields.
In addition to Jamila Sedqi, The European International Women’s Leadership prize was also awarded to Chantal Hemerijckx (Belgium), Thao Kilbee (Vietnam, Belgium), Marie-Dolores Mabuila (Democratic Republic of Congo, Belgium), Monique Ouassa (Benin), Rita Ricketts (New Zealand, UK), and Svetlana Spaic (Yugoslavia, Serbia, Paris).
