Rabat – Morocco’s House of Councilors is set to host the Parliamentary Dialogue Forum of the Senates and Equivalent Councils of Africa, the Arab World, Latin America, and the Caribbean on March 4-5.
The forum seeks to advocate for peace, sustainable development, democratic governance, and human rights, as well as social, environmental, and climate justice.
The event aims to create a space for dialogue between the participating parties and boost interactive exchange to facilitate regional integration and south-south cooperation.
The forum will also focus on strengthening the action of the senates in the field of economic diplomacy and develop south-south parliamentary dialogue on issues of common interest.The forum intends to do so while improving the role of the legislative institution as the authority responsible for strengthening democratic and territorial governance.
Participants are also expected to issue legislative proposals and recommendations to be examined at African, Arab, and Latin American government summits and congresses.
“The African continent and the Arab world with the Latin American and Caribbean region have formed the basis of historical relations between the countries and peoples, since Arab and African migration to Latin America has given rise to a cultural and human diversification enriching the civilizational heritage,” reads a press release quoted byMorocco’s state press agency.
South-south cooperation is a strategic option to strengthen dialogue, solidarity, and development to collectively respond to common challenges, the document added.
The upcoming forum is expected to further boost bilateral and multilateral visit exchanges between the parliaments of Arab countries, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
“It is important to implement the prerogatives of legislative institutions through strong and efficient parliamentary diplomacy, aimed at exploring development opportunities and promoting cultural ties between the continents,” the statement noted.
The forum also aims to strengthen the role of non-governmental actors in promoting cooperation to ensure security and stability in all regions.
Legislative bodies across Africa, the Arab world, Latin America and the Caribbean aspire to establish a forum for parliamentary dialogue as a mechanism for consolidating vital South-South parliamentary cooperation.
