Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has inaugurated the work of the new regional bomb squad in the city of Fez.
The DGSN’s new service, Regional Brigade of Artificers, will include highly specialized police staff to address security challenges and threats related to violent crime and terrorism.
The staff of the new unit will be tasked with providing both technical and field support for judicial investigators through the detection of explosive objects and materials.
Hicham El Kendoussi, a Peace Officer at the Regional Brigade of Artificers in Fez, told Moroccan state media (MAP) that the creation of the unit is part of Morocco’s ongoing development and modernization of its security forces.
The unit seeks to both strengthen and equip new security services and structures with specialized operational units able to respond to security challenges, such as terrorism and violent crimes.
In line with instructions from the General Director of DGSN and the National Security of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) Abdellatif Hammouchi, the security department in Morocco focused on implementing a major project “which concerns the establishment of several regional brigades,” noted MAP’s report.
According to El Kandoussi, DGSN has deployed the necessary human and material resources for the project, through training as well as equipment enabling the units to “accomplish their missions in the best conditions.”

The regional brigade of artificers will work to detect suspicious or explosive objects as well as neutralize homemade explosive devices, contributing to the security of cultural, political, and sporting events.
Morocco has in the past three years created five similar units in different cities, including Marrakech, Laayoune, Oujda, Casablanca, and Tangier.
Meanwhile, Moroccan security forces have dismantled dozens of ISIS terrorist cells in recent years.
In its latest operation today, Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) arrested one ISIS member in Tata, in central Morocco.
The suspect was planning to carry out terror attacks, targeting foreign nationals, senior officials, and sensitive security sites.
