Rabat – Moroccan pharmacist Lamia Tazi features in the Forbes’ “Top 50 Healthcare Leaders 2022” list for the MENA region.

The magazine’s list includes the most impactful and innovative leaders in the healthcare industry across North Africa and the Middle East.

Out of the 50 leaders in the healthcare industry across the region, there are six women.

Tazi, who is the chairwoman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Sothema, comes in 28th place. She is the only personality from North Africa that features in Forbes’ list.

Sothema company is a leading Moroccan pharmaceutical company in the MENA region.

The ranking highlights leaders that span the healthcare ecosystem, including people from hospitals, clinics, pharmaceutical companies, diagnostics centers, and health technology providers.

Heads of pharmaceutical companies dominate the list with 20 entries, followed by 19 heads of the largest hospitals in MENA.

Forbes magazine took into consideration several criteria during the ranking, including the size and revenue of the companies, the impact of the leaders on the region’s healthcare sector, innovative initiatives implemented and their experience in the sector.

The UAE dominates the list with 25 firms, followed by Saudi Arabia  with 13, six in Egypt, two from Qatar, and one each from Kuwait, Algeria, Jordan, and Morocco – Sothema.

Tazi joined Sothema in 1998 as a pharmacist and has climbed the ladder to become a general manager then a CEO.

With a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of Liege in Belgium, Tazi is also vice-president of the Moroccan Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry and Innovation (FMIIP) and the Moroccan Association of Exporters (ASMEX).

The Moroccan pharmacist has contributed to the development of the pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years.

Global health innovation funding reached $44 billion in 2021 while acquisitions of health and healthtech firms grew by 50%, according to the World Economic Forum.
