Rabat – As part of Morocco’s efforts to tighten security measures and prevent stadium riots, the Director-General of the National Security Forces (DGSN), Abdellatif Hammouchi, visited earlier today the Mohammed V Complex Stadium in Casablanca ahead of the Al Ahly-Wydad football game.
Hammouchi went in person to the stadium to oversee security measures local authorities have put in motion to guarantee a peaceful showdown between Morocco’s football club Wydad and their Egyptian counterpart Al Ahly.
The football game will be held in the presence of 6000 police officers equipped to handle riots.
Prominent figures of world football, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, will be present at today’s game.
The extensive police reinforcement will include police vehicles and police units specially dedicated to managing security at major sporting events.
The draconian set of measures to maintain security at a sports event are part of Morocco’s efforts to limit violence and football riots that almost inevitably turn bloody, destroy public and private property, and can go as far as to claim lives.
On May 15, football riots claimed the life of a 17-year-old football fan who was stabbed to death by fans of a rival team.
In a scenario similar to gang violence, the young man was surrounded by fans on his way to a restaurant while he was wearing clothing and accessories showing his allegiance to AS FAR, a local football club.
Fans of the rival team intercepted him before stabbing him to death in an incident that marked the culmination of football-related violence in Morocco.
