Rabat – WhatsApp has introduced new features for its “communities” update including emoji reactions, sending up to 2GB files, and adding up to 512 members in a single group.

These features are a work in progress as WhatsApp works on reducing group overload through the use of emojis, as well as providing a platform for large groups to interact with each other.

On Thursday, WhatsApp noted in a blog an increase in the limit of file sizes the app allows to be send, raising the limit from 100 MB to 2GB. The company also recommended the use of WiFi for uploading and downloading large files.

“As we announced last month with our vision for Communities on WhatsApp, we’re now building for organizations, businesses, and other close-knit groups to communicate securely and get things done on WhatsApp,“ the statement said.

In mid-April, WhatsApp announced its “communities” feature. The new update will enable users to bring together different groups in one community. The new structure allows sending updates to the entire community and organize discussion groups.

Under the “communities” feature, group admins can remove what they consider to be problematic messages from everyone’s chats. It also allows large voice calls that include up to 32 users.

Currently, WhatsApp is commonly used for personal and professional communications, making it a common platform for large group meetings and discussions.

In 2021, Moroccan marketing agency Sungeria Group reported that 79% of Moroccans use the application on a daily basis.

With a large fan base in Morocco, WhatsApp and its social media peers are gaining a wider base of users in the country.

Currently, 9 out of 10 Moroccan children use a smartphone. This new generation of users will likely use WhatsApp and other social media platforms intensively as means of communication on a daily basis.

Yet the prevalence of social media use raises questions about the ability of parents to protect their children from the dark side of the internet and social networks.
