Rabat – Morocco’s supply of healthy livestock for Eid Al Adha, including sheep and goats, exceeds seven million against the demand of around 6 million, Government Spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said on Thursday.
As part of the country’s free vaccination campaign, around two million cows have been vaccinated against Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) and around 19 million sheep have been vaccinated against the plague and sheeppox, while 4.5 million goats have been vaccinated against the plague, added Baitas.
Baitas made the statements during a press briefing following the weekly government council held in Rabat.
The Government Spokesperson added that the monitoring operations have so far resulted in the registration of 242,000 sheep and goat fattening farms and the identification of 5 million livestock.
As a part of the monitoring campaign, more than 263 samples of livestock feed have been taken for testing, which resulted in two violation reports, Baitas added.
Morocco’s National Health Security Office of Food (ONSSA) said that the identification of the livestock is performed free of charge for the benefit of all fattening breeders. The office launched the operation on April 4.
ONSSA identifies healthy livestock for Eid Al Adha by putting a yellow tag with a unique serial number on one of the ears of each unit of livestock.
The identification operation helps Moroccans acquire healthy sheep and goats intended for ritual slaughter for the Muslim festivity, as well as facilitate their traceability if necessary, indicated the OSSA.
Eid Al Adha is a holy festival that Muslims celebrate by sacrificing a sheep, goat, or other livestock.
Muslims across the world are expected to celebrate Eid Al Adha in July.
