Rabat – Tetouan’s Saniat R’mel airport tops the list of  Moroccan airports with a strong post-pandemic recovery of passenger traffic. Traffic at the airport bounced back more than fourfold in the first six months of 2022 compared to 2019.

Saniat R’mel airport welcomed over 66,000 passengers between January and June 2022, according to data from the National Airports Office (ONDA).

While the overall number of passengers rose exponentially in 2022, the number of flights remains below pre-pandemic levels. At the end of June, the airport reported 138 flights, down from 246 in the same period of 2019.

Regarding commercial air traffic, Saniat R’mel of Tetouan recorded a volume of commercial traffic of 17,489 passengers through 24 flights in June alone, against 5,338 passengers through 32 flights during the same period in 2019.

The Tetouan airport is not the only one in Morocco to have exceeded pre-pandemic traffic activity.

The airport of Guelmim ranks second nationally, with passenger traffic exceeding pre-pandemic levels by more than 20%, followed by the airport of Oujda-Angad with a recovery rate of 104%

Despite the impressive recovery rates of some airports, the national airport traffic recovery rate averages 64%. This number indicates that some national airports are yet to bounce back fully from the COVID-induced stagnation of airport activity.

Noting the state of national airport traffic, ONDA explains that Moroccan airports welcomed over 7 million passengers through more than 70,000 flights, a 72% recovery rate in aircraft traffic against 2019.

On the international level, the recovery rate of air travel averaged 66%.
