Rabat – Russia’s export agency has announced that it seeks to boost its agro-food exports to Morocco by 10 times compared to 2021.
The Russian Federal Agency for the promotion of exports “AgroExport,” a department within the Ministry of Agriculture, announced that Moscow currently seeks a tenfold increase in agricultural exports to Morocco, compared to 2021, according to media reports.
In a statement to Russian media outlet Sputnik, AgroExport said in a statement, Tuesday that Russia exported a total of 127,600 tonnes of agricultural products to Morocco in 2021.
Russia’s agriculture exports to Morocco were worth $49 million in 2021, representing only 0.1% of the total volume of Russian overall agricultural exports in the same year, the report adds.
The agency said to the press that Russia’s agriculture exports to Morocco could reach $500 million per year, including products such as cereals, meat, and vegetable oils, among other products.
In 2021, Russian agricultural exports to Morocco mainly consisted of wheat, making 61% of overall exports, followed by meat and other animal products with 19%, and finally fisheries products with 15%, the report specifies.
Morocco equally is a major exporter of agri-food products to the Western European country. In the course of the seven first months of 2022, Morocco’s vegetable and fruit exports to Russia rose by 45% compared to the previous year.
Russia’s imports of fruits and vegetables totaled 5.1 billion tonnes at the end of July, official sources indicate.
Morocco’s citrus makes up the bulk of exports. Almost 90% of the country’s agri-food exports to Russia are citrus, with Morocco exporting 53,600 tonnes of clementines and over 33,700 tonnes of tangerines at the end of July.
