Rabat – The Moroccan community abroad invested more than MAD 700 million ($65.6 Million) in the Moroccan economy by the end of 2021.

According to a report from Morocco’s Capital Market Authorities (AMMC), the inflow of investments from Moroccans residing abroad grew by an annual rate of 34%, going from MAD 521 ($48.8 million) at the end of 2020 to MAD 700 million one year later.

Despite the remarkable annual growth, the inflow of investments sourced from Moroccans residing abroad made up last year only 0.3% of the overall volume of foreign investments into the Moroccan economy, the AMMC report details.

Foreigners who are not residing in Morocco account for the bulk of foreign investments in the Moroccan economy.

According to AMMC’s data, foreigners who are not residing in Morocco accounted for 98.9% of the overall foreign investments at the end of last year, totaling MAD 207 billion ($19.4 billion),  up from MAD 188.8 billion ($17.6 billion) in 2020.

The report further explains that foreigners residing in Morocco invested last year a total of MAD 1.2 billion ($112.4 million) in the Moroccan economy, making up 0.5% of foreign investments in the country.

Investments from foreigners residing in Morocco grew at an annual rate of more than 35% at the end of 2021, the report indicates.

While their overall contribution to foreign investments does not exceed 1%, Moroccans residing abroad account for 39% of foreign capital invested in Moroccan mutual funds – an investment vehicle.

According to data compiled by the AMMC, Moroccans residing abroad invested MAD 1.02 billion $112.4 million) in mutual funds at the end of last year.
