Rabat – King Mohammed VI has sent a message of congratulations to the members of the national football team following their historic achievement at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
In a letter, the King wrote that he had followed “with great joy and elation” the team’s “brilliant performance at the 2022 World Cup in the State of Qatar,” where they have succeeded, “with brilliance and merit,” to become the first African or Arab team to reach the semi-finals.
“While congratulating you on this historic and unprecedented achievement, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks and pride for what you have accomplished during this great footballing event, in terms of exceptional performance and remarkable discipline which reflect the great professionalism, high competitiveness, sincere patriotism, and noble human values,” he added.
To the Moroccan monarch, the team’s achievements “embody the spirit of challenge” and a “determination to spare no effort to raise the flag of Moroccan soccer high on the international scene and represent African and Arab soccer as it should be.”
The King also praised the team for amazing the world with a talented and determined performance and with their attachment to their country, emphasizing that their historic run brought joy not only to Moroccans, but also to other nations, especially Arab and African ones.
The monarch further shared his wishes for the team for a successful run in the upcoming tournaments.
Since the start of the tournament, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has been a vehement supporter of the national team.
After the team scored the historic win against Spain, King Mohammed VI joined the fans in Rabat to celebrate Morocco.
A video showing the monarch inside his car wearing the Moroccan national team’s jersey went viral. King Mohammed VI was carrying the Moroccan flag as he celebrated the team’s qualification to the quarter-finals.
Morocco became the first Arab or African country to ever reach the semi-final stage of the FIFA World Cup. The team dazzled audiences around the world with their outstanding performance.
The team started this year’s tournament on a strong note, qualifying for the round of 16 on top of Group F, before defeating Spain and Portugal to qualify for the semi-final stage.
The Atlas Lions’ achievement this year cannot be underestimated. Their performance stole international headlines, with commentators everywhere lauding the team’s discipline and talent in its pursuit of a series of victories against heavy-weight opponents.
While they fell short of reaching the final stage of the tournament, the team has raised hopes and proved that Morocco has a fair shot at winning the next competition in 2026, as Morocco’s Coach Walid Regragui pointed out after the match against France.
“This World Cup, Morocco’s World Cup, will be remembered, instead, as a beginning,” wrote the New York Times.
