Rabat – Ahead of the all-important semi-final game between Morocco and France, reports suggest shopkeepers in Qatar can barely keep up with the demand for Moroccan merchandise.
Selling out of stock is a retailer’s dream come true. And according to reports, the Atlas Lions replica football jerseys have sold out in Qatar and Moroccan supporters are still demanding more.
A seller told news outlet Al Jazeera that in November they would only sell a handful of Moroccan shirts a day. Sales have spiked however, following Morocco’s historic wins against major teams such as Spain and Portugal.
Retailer Mohammed Sadiq told the same news outlet: “Every time Morocco won, we would place an order for hundreds more [shirts] and sell out by mid-afternoon on the day of the next game.”
As the love grew for the Atlas Lions, fans wanted to wear or wave their country’s symbolic red and green colors with pride. So they have been flocking to the shops and stocking up on merchandise.
The Atlas Lions have won the hearts of millions worldwide, whether they are lifelong supporters or new members of the fan base just like Yousef Ahmed from India.“I wasn’t a Morocco fan until I saw them beat the big European teams,” the source detailed.
Ahmed said he had been looking for a Moroccan football shirt for days but they are always sold out. “So I will make do with a flag,” he announced, defeated.
According to the retailers, their suppliers in Bangladesh and China are completely out of Moroccan shirts too.
Finding a quick fix to the supply and demand issue shopkeepers started botch-making manufacturing Moroccan flags in Qatar, to cash in on Morocco’s winning streak as much as possible.
“A group of Bangladeshi and Pakistani men got sheets of red cloth from a local market and made these flags at home,” explained retailer Sharf-ud-Din.
In January 2022 official data showed that Bayern Munich football jerseys were the best-selling out of all the football clubs, with a mind-boggling 3,250,000 units sold. Spain’s Real Madrid came in second place with just over 3 million sales.
Morocco will face France tonight at 8:00 pm Moroccan time at Al Bayt stadium in Al-Khor Qatar.
