Rabat – Morocco’s agricultural and maritime food products exceeded the threshold of MAD 80 billion ($7.79 billion) for the first time in 2022.

The number represents an increase of nearly 20% compared to 2021, according to data from Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture.

The maritime and agriculture exports are ranked 3rd among Moroccan export sectors, the ministry added, emphasizing the improvement in the sector’s performance during 2022 despite an inauspicious global context.

The new data also show good development in the exports of fresh fruits and vegetables, which reached a volume of 2.3 million tonnes last year, representing an annual growth of 10%.

Soft fruit exports also recorded a growth of 20%, with a volume of 131,900 tonnes.

The ministry also touted Morocco’s exports to the American market, which experienced a significant growth in citrus exports.

Exports of fishery products also increased by 13% in volume and 16% in value to reach MAD 28 billion ($2.72 billion), the ministry further indicated.

Meanwhile, exports of canned fish recorded a growth of 7% in volume and 30% in value, while processed agricultural products exports recorded an increase of 5% in volume and 19% in value compared to a year earlier.

Olive oil exports also rose by 85% in volume and 49% in value in the same period, according to the same statistics.

The ministry’s data confirms the findings of the latest statistics from Morocco’s Exchange Office (EO), which indicated that the country’s exports of goods amounted to $37.32 billion as of the end of November 2022.

The number represents an increase of 33.1% or $9.2 billion, and the EO attributed the improvement to the recovery of key sectors, including phosphates, agriculture, and automotive sectors.

Morocco’s agriculture and agri-food exports stood at MAD 73.8 billion ($7 billion) at the end of November in 2022, up from MAD 62.36 billion (5.97 billion) recorded in 2021, the data showed.
