Rabat – The city of Rabat has been featured in Time Magazine’s World Greatest Places for this year, with the magazine putting a particular spotlight on places that make the Moroccan capital worthy of the attention of art and culture enthusiasts.

Describing the city as a “budding cultural metropolis,” the American magazine highlighted that “artistic and cultural reinvention is bringing new life” to Rabat.

It also cited the city’s artistic and cultural venues, including the Grand Theatre of Rabat, which it called the biggest theater in Africa and the Arab world.

The Grand Theater’s design is the creation of the famous late British architect of Iraqi descent, Zaha Hadid, known for her avant-garde designs and prestigious architectural works.

According to the magazine, the theater’s opening will take place this year and it will host ballet, opera, symphony, and philharmonic performances.

The theater features a 7,000-seat amphitheater, a 127-seat modular room, a restaurant with panoramic views, shops, cafes, and a bookstore.

Also highlighted in the magazine’s celebration of Rabat is the LEED-Gold and HQE-certified Mohammed VI Tower—the tallest tower in Africa— which will feature “luxury accommodations “and a panoramic viewing terrace at a height of roughly 800 feet.

In addition to its cultural and artistic venues, Rabat is home to a number of music, film, art, and festival events, including Visa for Music, which is a platform that offers Moroccan, African, and Middle Eastern artists the opportunity to perform for a large audience.

Other countries in the MENA region that were listed in the 50 extraordinary destinations to explore include Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Time Magazine’s spotlighting of Rabat comes as yet another confirmation of Morocco’s status as one of the world’s top destinations for tourism. Cities like Fes, Eassouira, Marrakech, Tangier, and Casablanca have continued to attract millions of visitors over the years.

Earlier this year, the New York Times featured Essaouira among its must-see tourist destinations. The American newspaper offered its readers a travel itinerary to explore the Moroccan city, including its art galleries, guesthouses, and “blossoming design scene.”
