Rabat – Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita has emphasized the impacts of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on global peace and security.
Bourita made his comments on the conflict during a press conference on Tuesday with Austria’s Federal Deputy Minister for European and International Affairs Peter Launsky- Tieffenthal.
Speaking about Morocco’s position on the dispute between Russia and Ukraine, the Moroccan FM stressed that the North African country is not a “party to the armed conflict” between the two countries.
Bourita reaffirmed that Morocco has not and will not participate in any form whatsoever in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
Morocco, as a member of the international community, traits this conflict as an issue that affects global peace and security.
He indicated that Morocco’s position vis-a-vis the conflict is based on the principles of preservation of the sovereignty of states and respect for the territorial integrity of the member countries of the UN, as well as respecting international law and the UN charter.
“Every time there is a vote within the UN and its specialized agencies, Morocco abstains from voting except when the resolution concerns the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law and according to the four principles which it defends,” Bourita emphasized.
On February 23, Morocco was among the 141 countries that voted on a UN resolution calling for Russia’s immediate withdrawal from Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the North African country has abstained from voting on a few previous resolutions, but later clarified its position following criticism.
In March last year, Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to similar criticism, stressing that its non-participation in one of the UN General Assembly’s resolutions on Russia should not be subjected to any interpretation.
“The Kingdom of Morocco continues to follow with concern the evolution of the situation between Ukraine and the Russian Federation,” the ministry said, emphasizing that it regrets seeing military escalation between the two countries.
The North African country also continues to renew commitment to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all Member States of the UN.
Echoing Bourita’s recent remarks, the ministry emphasized: “The Kingdom of Morocco recalls that, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, the Members of the Organization must settle their disputes by peaceful means and according to the principles of international law, in order to preserve world peace and security.”
During his press conference with the Austrian official, Morocco’s FM renewed the country’sposition stressing that Morocco clearly expressed its position through a positive vote when it comes to the principles of international law and the UN Charter.
