Rabat – Morocco has shined at the 48th edition of the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, winning a gold medal with Congratulations of the Jury, as well as a silver medal.
The team representing Morocco includes inventors and researchers Hafid Griguer and Rafiq El Alami from the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). They received the gold medal in the biotechnology category and a silver medal in the category of digital technology in agricultural management.
In an interview with SNRT News, Griguer said that their “BioTouch” project won in the biotechnology category, as it is considered a “global breakthrough” in the area of blood sugar testing.

He explained that BioTouch is a portable device for the non-invasive control of glycemia. The device helps diabetic patients measure blood sugar levels without having to prick their skin to obtain blood.
Meanwhile, the “Leaf-Life” project, which won the silver medal, is a digital system based on a new generation of sensors capable of real-time communication with plant leaves. The device allows for the non-invasive detection of osmotic activity and the identification of inputs in plant tissue.

The Moroccan researcher took to LinkedIn to celebrate the win, saying: “The best way to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day from Geneva is to be crowned with a gold medal with jury congratulations in the biotech category of the largest invention competition in the world.”
The two gold medals Morocco has snatched reflect UM6P’s focus on contributing to technological innovation, adding to the many awards and recognitions it has received for its research and development initiatives.
In February, UM6P’s Green Energy Park won an innovation award for its contributions to renewable energy research and development. The university was awarded the Green Energy Park through the start-up iSmart, which has designed and developed a 100% Morocco charging station for electric cars.
In 2022, UM6P was recognized as a “Climate Hero” by the Youth Constituency of The United Nations Framework on Climate Change (YOUNGO), demonstrating the university’s commitment to tackle climate change.
The research-oriented university has partnered with several international universities, institutions, and companies in various fields, allowing it to consolidate its position at the forefront of innovation and research.
The Geneva Inventions competition, which is taking place between April 26 and 30, is an annual event dedicated to featuring the latest technological innovations.
It brings together researchers, inventors, universities, industrial and commercial companies, and private and public institutes from across the world. The event features a wide range of activities, including workshops and conferences on cutting-edge technologies and innovations.
