Rabat – US Special Envoy To Monitor And Combat Antisemitism Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt applauded the spirit of peaceful coexistence and tolerance between Jewish and Muslim people that she observed during a recent visit to Essaouira. The US official said the spirit sets Essaouira as an example among other Moroccan cities in consolidating a spirit of tolerance for centuries.
The American envoy was welcomed by Andre Azoulay, advisor to King Mohammed VI, and visited the Old City, as well as the Jewish Museum called the “House of Memory.”
“I came to know about Essaouira’s diverse cultural heritage, and how different cultures, religions, and ethnicities peacefully coexist,” Lipstadt said.
“This is what makes Morocco unique in the coexistence and understanding between various religions and cultures,” she continued.
Lipstadt visited Essaouira in November of last year, and was received by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.
During the visit, the US diplomat hailed Morocco’s efforts to fight against antisemitism, hatred and prejudice.
Earlier this month, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) paid a visit to Morocco in which it praised King Mohammed VI’s role in protecting religious minorities in the North African country.
Head of the AJC Political Affairs Department Jason Isaacson praised the king’s role in protecting the Jewish community, following a talk with Bourita which focused on Morocco’s partnership with the US in the fight against terrorism.
