Rabat – The tragic killing of a 17-year-old by a French police officer has set off a wave of unrest in France, leading to three consecutive nights of violent protests and reigniting a contentious debate surrounding discrimination and law enforcement practices in marginalized, multi-ethnic communities.
The incident unfolded during a routine traffic stop on Tuesday morning in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, when the teenager named Nahel was shot dead at point-blank range. Disturbing footage captured by a bystander shows two officers positioned by the driver’s side of Nahel’s vehicle, with one of them firing his gun at the young driver, despite no apparent immediate threat.
The officer claimed that he discharged his weapon out of concern that Nahel would endanger others by potentially running them over, Nanterre prosecutor Pascal Prache stated today.
In an emotional on-camera interview with France 5 television, Nahel’s mother, Mounia, expressed her singular blame towards the officer who took her son’s life, while absolving the police force as a whole.
“I don’t blame the police; I blame one person, the one who took my son’s life,” Mounia stated firmly.
Prache confirmed that the officer’s actions are suspected to be illegal, and as a result, he is now the subject of a formal investigation for voluntary homicide. The officer has been placed in preliminary detention pending the inquiry.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage, leading to escalating protests across the country. Hundreds of individuals have been arrested in connection with the demonstrations, as the public demands justice and accountability for Nahel’s untimely death.

France finds itself at the center of a renewed discussion on discrimination and policing practices, with critics emphasizing the urgent need for reform to prevent further tragedies and address deep-rooted social issues.
Following the death of the young man, streets across major French cities have been torn by violent protests and vandalism.
To address the escalating unrest, the French government has taken measures by deploying approximately 40,000 police officers across the country, aiming to de-escalate the riots and restore order, Reuters reported.
Despite the security reinforcement, the protests have persisted and gained momentum in major urban centers such as Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Pau, Toulouse, and Lille.
Some of the demonstrations have turned violent, leading to numerous arrests and clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Instances of arson and vandalism have been reported, with symbolic structures like town halls, schools, and police stations becoming targets.
France’s Interior Minister, Gerald Darmani, announced today that a total of 667 arrests were made during the previous night, indicating the magnitude of the unrest.
In response to the mounting crisis, President Emmanuel Macron has curtailed his trip to Brussels, where he was attending a European Union summit, in order to convene a “crisis meeting” on Friday, according to AFP.
Meanwhile, the Paris prosecutor’s office has launched a formal investigation into the police officer involved in the shooting. According to converging reports, the officer has been placed under investigation for voluntary homicide.
