Rabat – King Mohammed VI has granted a royal pardon to a total of 1,434 individuals who were convicted by different courts in the country, with some currently held in detention and others already having been released, the Ministry of Justice announced.
The royal pardon, a traditional gesture of clemency that the king extends during significant religious occasions, aims to offer a second chance and a fresh start to convicts.
Among the beneficiaries of the royal pardon, 1,189 individuals are currently held in detention, while 245 individuals are already serving a suspended prison sentence.
The sentences of 171 detainees have been pardoned for the remaining duration of their prison sentence or confinement, while a remission of prison or confinement sentences has been granted to 1,012 detainees.
The royal pardon also extended to 6 prisoners serving life terms, whose sentences have been turned into fixed-term sentences.
As for those who have a suspended prison sentence, 86 individuals have received a pardon for their prison sentences or the remaining period thereof, while 19 individuals have had their prison sentences pardoned. The pardon did not extend to fines.
Meanwhile, 136 individuals have been pardoned for their fines, and 3 individuals have been granted a pardon for both their prison sentences and fines.
The statement from the justice ministry further shows that one individual has been pardoned for their fine along with their remaining prison term.
The royal pardon was announced one day ahead of Eid Al Adha, a ceremony that carries great religious significance to Muslims in Morocco and all around the world.
