Rabat – Morocco’s national women’s football team arrived in Australia as they gear up for the prestigious 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The upcoming tournament, which is taking place in Australia and New Zealand, placed the Lionesses in a challenging group alongside formidable opponents including Germany, South Korea, and Colombia.

Prior to the tournament, the Atlas Lionesses are set to face Jamaica in a friendly match on July 16 at the Brisbane Lion Stadium.

The national women football team made history after successfully earning their spot in the Women’s World Cup for the very first time following their victory over Botswana in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in 2022.

The Atlas Lionesses displayed an exceptional performance throughout the continental tournament, making their way to the final for the first time in history before being defeated by South Africa.

Morocco proudly stands as the sole representative from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in the upcoming global tournament.

This year, the team also advanced one position in the most recent FIFA rankings, currently occupying the 72nd spot. Their remarkable performances have earned them the esteemed title of being the seventh-best team in Africa.

Highlighting their stellar performance this year, FIFA published an article earlier this year titled “Success coming naturally for Atlas Lionesses,” which praised the rapid progress of women’s football in Morocco.

The article emphasized the potential of the Atlas Lionesses, suggesting that they are on the verge of making a significant impact on the global stage.

In addition, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) honored three Moroccan players in its “best eleven” for the 2022 WAFCON.

Ghizlane Chebbak, Fatima Tagnaout, and Zineb Redouani received recognition for their exceptional skills and remarkable performances throughout the tournament, earning them well-deserved spots in the tournament’s all-star team.
