Rabat – The Moroccan Association of Publishers and various bookstores have retracted a children’s book that contains content supportive of the LGBTQ+ community.
The French book in question is titled “My Little Questions for All Families,” and contains a picture of a same-sex couple walking with their seemingly adopted child. The image is captioned “Two women or two men can fall in love, marry, and raise a child. They form a homoparental family.”
The book sparked widespread controversy as some worried parents shared pictures of the book with the Moroccan Association of Publishers, who then promptly intervened and informed bookstores, resulting in the retraction of the book, according to a statement from Camille Hoballah, President of the Moroccan Publishers’ Association.
“Distributors were not aware of the content of the book at first. The book, like many others, was dispatched to a network of stores before we released the harmful content it contains,” Hoballah told Morocco World News (MWN).
“The book goes against Moroccan and Islamic values, promoting same-sex marriage and normalizing the idea for children,” Hoballah explained.
In addition to the Moroccan Moroccan Publishers’ Association, a report from Le360 indicates that the same book was pulled from sale on Monday at a shopping center in Rabat, following strict instructions from the local authorities.
“The authorities were notified, and immediately, the concerned title was removed from the shopping center’s shelves. A government source told Le360 that three boxes of the same book were also confiscated,” the report reads
The report further adds that inspectors from the Ministry of National Education and Customs Administration were sent to the scene to begin removing the books.
