Rabat – FIFA’s President Gianni Infantino congratulated Morocco for their debut participation in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
In an Instagram post, Infantino wrote: “Congratulations to Morocco for its memorable debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.”
Noting the Atlas Lionesses’ impressive run, Infantino explained that “the Moroccan team’s journey to the round of 16 has proven that they have a place at the highest level.”

For Infantino, Morocco’s qualification reflects that football is accessible to everyone, and is a celebration of diversity within the sport. “This has also been an opportunity to affirm that football is accessible to everyone. So, I would like to thank them for playing an essential role in making this FIFA Women’s World Cup the most inclusive and grandiose of all time,” he added.
This year, Morocco’s qualification for the FIFA Women’s World set a precedent not only for Morocco but for all Arab and North African countries.
In addition to qualifying for the tournament for the first time, the team equally managed to advance I to the round of 16 where they lost 4-0 to France, concluding their journey at the world cup.
In the group stage of the tournament, the Moroccan team lost 6-0 to Germany, before scoring their first 1-0 win against South Korea and another 1-0 win against Colombia to finish second in the group and earn a spot in the round of 16.
