Rabat – A tragic road accident occurred in the rural area of Ikhsane Amzaro in the Azilal region, claiming the lives of 24 individuals after a minibus overturned on Sunday morning.

In the aftermath of the horrific accident, emergency services and local authorities were dispatched to the scene to rescue survivors and tend to the wounded, according to a report from news channel 2M.

Adel Ait Hadou, the regional delegate for health and social protection, confirmed the tragic death toll, stating that 24 people lost their lives in the accident.

The deceased were immediately transported to the regional hospital in Demnate to be identified and prepared for their final journey back to their families.

The toll from road accidents continues to rise in Morocco.

Earlier this week, the country’s National Security General Directorate (DGSN) announced in a statement that 11 people died, and over 2,000 others were injured in 1,771 traffic accidents that occurred within urban areas during the week from July 24 to July 30, 2023.

The accidents were mainly caused by drivers not adhering to road safety measures.

The list of causes included driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, failure to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, speeding, pedestrian negligence, vehicle control issues, changing direction without signaling, and unauthorized direction changes.

The list of driving infractions also included failure to stop at stop signs, driving on the left lane, disregarding traffic signals, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving in the wrong direction, and faulty overtaking.
