Rabat – Former British crocodile expert Adam Britton has confessed to a litany of heinous charges, including bestiality and child abuse material. The revelations came to light in an Australian courtroom, where Britton admitted to filming acts of cruelty towards dogs and distributing disturbing videos online.
A prominent zoologist known for his work with esteemed institutions such as the BBC and National Geographic, Britton now awaits his sentencing, which is scheduled for a later date, BBC reports.
Born in West Yorkshire, Britton spent over two decades in Australia, where he built a global reputation for his expertise in the field of crocodile research. Armed with a Ph.D. in zoology, the 51-year-old held an academic position at Charles Darwin University and had the privilege of hosting esteemed naturalist David Attenborough on his property during the filming of the “Life in Cold Blood” docuseries.
The courtroom proceedings in the Northern Territory (NT) Supreme Court on Monday were fraught with graphic details that left many attendees deeply disturbed. The judge presiding over the case, Chief Justice Michael Grant, deemed the evidence so grotesque that he issued a warning to those present, fearing the potential for “nervous shock.” In an unusual step, security officers and junior court officials were excused from the courtroom, as reported by local media.
Prosecutors in the case revealed that Britton had harbored a sadistic sexual interest in animals since at least 2014. In addition to subjecting his own pets to unspeakable acts of cruelty, he also manipulated other dog owners into surrendering their animals to him. Using Gumtree Australia, an online marketplace, as his hunting ground, Britton would befriend individuals looking to rehome their pets due to travel or work commitments.
He would establish a rapport with them, gaining their trust before taking custody of the animals. When former pet owners reached out to him for updates, he would feed them false narratives and send them outdated photos.

Behind closed doors, Britton had converted a shipping container on his property into a horrifying “torture room,” equipped with recording equipment. It was within this chamber of horrors that he inflicted torment upon the dogs, capturing the gruesome acts on video under various pseudonyms before disseminating them online.
The shocking nature of one of these videos eventually came to the attention of the NT (Northern territory) police, who promptly arrested Britton in April 2022. Out of the 42 dogs that fell victim to Britton’s cruelty in the 18 months leading up to his arrest, a heart-wrenching 39 lost their lives.
The disgraced zoologist has remained in custody since his arrest, awaiting his day in court. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for December, when he will face the full weight of justice for his abhorrent crimes.
