Rabat – Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch chaired On September 25 in Rabat the fourth meeting of the interministerial commission in charge of deploying an emergency program to rehabilitate and help rebuild the homes destroyed in the aftermath of the Al Haouz earthquake.
Akhannouch affirmed that the government will use all resources at its disposal to achieve a rapid reconstruction, which will include repairing damaged hospitals, schools, and other important buildings.
The renovation and reconstruction projects are set to be financed through the special account created for managing the effects of the earthquake.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to assess how initiatives sanctioned by the emergency program implemented after instructions from King Mohammed VI were progressing.
Members of the committee also talked about the intention to create a special agency to oversee the implementation of reconstruction and rehabilitation projects as well as planned investments in disaster-stricken areas.
In addition, a series of meetings will be held over the next few days to coordinate efforts and finalize the vision for development projects in the affected areas, according to Akhannouch.
He further explained that the government is focused on increasing social and economic growth in these areas, as well as on the reconstruction of homes and the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure.
On September 23, Akhannouch paid a visit to Asni, one of the villages that was most affected by the September 8 earthquake, calling on residents to stand united to rebuild the High Atlas regions, pointing out that King Mohammed VI had earmarked a MAD 120 billion ($11.7 billion) plan to upgrade the affected areas.
The earthquake which shook central Morocco on September 8 has left nearly 3,000 dead, with over 5,500 reporting injuries of varying severities.
