Rabat – Spain is set to dispatch search and rescue teams to provide assistance to earthquake-afflicted regions in Morocco following an official appeal for aid from Rabat, as stated by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.
Speaking on Catalunya Radio, he emphasized that this act demonstrates Spanish solidarity and the strong bond of friendship between the people of Spain and Morocco, according to Al Jazeera.
Albares disclosed that he received the request for assistance from his Moroccan counterpart in the early hours of Sunday.
Since it struck Al Haouz Friday night, the earthquake claimed over 2,000 lives. Morocco’s King Mohammed VI declared a three-day national mourning for the victims.
While search and rescue operations are underway, a number of countries and international organizations have offered to assist Morocco.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed their deep sorrow and willingness to provide immediate aid.
European Union member countries, through the European Council, also expressed their sadness and readiness to assist Morocco in any way deemed useful.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu equally instructed government bodies to provide the necessary assistance to Morocco.
In the Middle East, president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, expressed support for Morocco and ordered an air bridge for critical relief.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani offered any form of assistance to deal with the repercussions of the earthquake.
