Rabat – The President of Morocco’s House of Councillors Enaam Mayara has canceled his work trip to Israel following an unexpected health emergency. The visit was scheduled to take place on Thursday.
The Moroccan House of Councillors released a statement on Wednesday saying that Mayara experienced a “sudden health problem” in Amman, where he was on an official visit to Jordan.
Mayara’s health status required immediate medical attention, necessitating his hospitalization and thorough medical examinations.
“Due to this health emergency, he was unable to continue the parliamentary visit that was scheduled for September 6 and 7, 2023, to both the Palestinian National Council and the Israeli Knesset,” added the statement.
The House of Councillors’ statement did not provide information on the rescheduled date or arrangements for the visit, which followed an invitation extended by Amir Ohana, the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset.
The visit aimed to deepen parliamentary ties between the two countries, building on the trilateral agreement inked between Morocco, the United States, and Israel in December 2020.
Mayara planned to discuss various subjects of mutual interest, including the Palestinian cause and Morocco’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The trip was also going to include meetings with United Nations officials and discussions with parliamentary and government representatives in Ramallah and Al-Quds.
Ohana expressed concern for Mayara’s health and wished him a speedy recovery, according to Israeli media.
“The ties between the countries are increasing and the Moroccan senate president’s visit was meant to be one of the highlights, but we are of course following after his health situation with concern and wish him a speedy recovery and full health,” he said.
