Rabat – Part of a bypass road collapsed early on Monday in Rabat after a liquid sewage collector broke, without causing any casualties, according to converging reports.

The incident happened on a road passing by the Hay Riad neighborhood, near the hypermarket chain Marjane on the Rabat-Casablanca highway.

Redal, the company in charge of electricity and water services in the city, reported in a statement that the incident occurred on “a collector with a diameter of 1.8 meters at a depth of 5 meters commissioned in 1996.”

The company said it is working to restore the situation, while making sure the part of the ring road remains safe.

To this end, “a special traffic plan has been put in place with the authorities, to preserve the safety of local residents, road users, and the intervention teams on site.”

Catastrophes such as road accidents and collapse of buildings have recently raised concerns among citizens who feel safety standards are not being met in a way that could risk their well-being.

In early August of this year, a catastrophic traffic accident resulted in the deaths of 24 people in the Aghchane crossroads in the Azilal region.

Following the accident, the Dmanat Azilal constituency’s parliamentary representative Rachid Mansouri highlighted serious concerns regarding the infrastructure and current level of road safety measures in rural areas.

Such incidents, as well as others relating to building safety and work conditions, have continued to raise concerns, with citizens expressing fears that deaths are likely to escalate further if authorities are not held accountable to enforce strict safety standards.
