Rabat – King Mohammed VI has appointed Youssef Amrani as Morocco’s new ambassador to the US in replacement of Princess Lalla Joumala, a statement from the royal palace said today.
The new Moroccan envoy to the US brings with him a rich portfolio marked by several similar positions, including his duties as Morocco’s ambassador to South Africa and to the EU.
Born in Tangier in 1953, Amrani is a veteran diplomat who has served in a wide range of positions, including State Secretary in charge of the Maghreb Union between 1989 and 1992 and Consul General in Barcelona between 1992 and 1996.
He also served as Morocco’s ambassador to Colombia, Chile, and Mexico.
Amrani holds a BA in Economics from the Mohammed V University of Rabat and a degree in Management from the Boston University School of Management.
The US and Morocco enjoy good diplomatic relations, judging from the constant exchange of visits between delegations and high-ranking officials.
The US has long been one of the strongest supporters of Morocco’s territorial integrity, and American support for Morocco has been even more remarkable since the Trump administration recognized the kingdom’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara in December 2020.
Bilateral trade has also steadily increased since the two countries signed in 2004 a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that came into force in 2006.
According to the US State Trade Representative, America’s goods exports to Morocco reached $3.7 billion in 2022, representing an increase of 33.3 % compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, US good imports from Morocco stood at $1.7 billion in 2022, up 33.3% from 2021.
