Rabat – President of Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaa, has announced the country’s plan to host the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
Lekjaa announced the plan in a statement to Radio Mars, suggesting that this is in line with Morocco’s preparatory campaign for the 2030 World Cup.
The announcement comes in the wake of the FIFA executive committee’s decision to unanimously select the joint Morocco-Spain-Portugal bid to host football’s biggest tournament in 2030.
The three countries will host 101 games, with each of them hosting 32 matches.
As for the opening games, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay will host a match, each.
According to Lekjaa, Morocco will dedicate six stadiums to host the World Cup games, including Fez, Tangier, Rabat, Agadir, Casablanca, and Marakech.
Other venues are being considered for some of the games, the FRMF chief said.
In addition to its plans to host the Club World Cup, Morocco has also been officially confirmed as the host of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In his remarks to Radio Mars, Lekjaa also confirmed that Morocco will host the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in 2024.
The country has received wide support from international football bodies, which have often hailed the world-class quality of its sporting infrastructure.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino spoke glowingly of Morocco’s organizational potential while visiting Rabat to attend the opening game of the latest WAFCON tournament in July last year.
The FIFA chief described the North African kingdom as a “great country, not only for football, but as one that knows how to organize important events.”
