Rabat – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that Palestinians are going through “one of the darkest chapters” of their history, in a statement issued for the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Wednesday.

The UN Chief reiterated his call for a “long-term” ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Guterres condemned the October 7 attack, but continued that it “cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”

He called for “unrestricted access to lifesaving aid, the release of all hostages, the protection of civilians, and an end to violations of international humanitarian law.”

Under pressure from the US, Egypt, and Qatar, Israel agreed to extend the four-day truce by two more days.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet announced that the army is already preparing to resume hostilities in the Gaza Strip once the ceasefire is over.

As the ceasefire enters its fifth day, the UN has reported that civilians in the Gaza Strip are finally receiving humanitarian aid after Israel has besieged the Strip, cutting off access to essential supplies including electricity, and fuel.

On Wednesday, the UN said that several tonnes of aid have managed to reach northern Gaza.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that the aid comprises pre-packaged meals, water for consumption, shelter items like tents and blankets, and medicinal supplies.

Deliveries have also included fuel for generating electricity, materials for desalination and sewage treatment facilities, and support for water pumping stations.

OCHA reported that drinking water is being transported to individuals in the southern region through two pipelines from Israel.
