After the passing of Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah at 86, the Kuwaiti Council of Ministers has announced a formal 40-day mourning period. In honor of the late Emir’s service and legacy, public departments will shutter for three days.
Born on June 25, 1937, in Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was the sixth son of Sheikh Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, who reigned as the tenth ruler of the State of Kuwait from 1921 to 1950.
Throughout his reign, the late Emir played significant roles in Kuwait’s governance. His political journey began in February 1962 when he assumed the governorship, holding the position for 16 years.
In March 1978, he took charge of the Ministry of Interior, eventually rising to the role of Minister of Defense in 1988.
Sheikh Nawaf was designated as the heir in 2006. During the events of 1990 when Iraqi forces invaded the oil-rich emirate, he served as the defense minister.
Recognized for his humility and preference for maintaining a low profile despite his prominent position as Kuwait’s monarch, the late Emir leaves behind a legacy of service and commitment to his nation.
